I love Autumn. I love Halloween, pumpkins, sweaters, the changing leaves, everything. In the UK, we don’t really do much to celebrate the autumn season and Halloween is no where near as much of a thing as it is in other parts of the world. I think this is a damn shame so for 2020 (a year where I really need a pick-me-up), I’m going to put together my own Autumn bucket list of things that I want to do to celebrate this coming season!
Food
- Eat Pumpkin and other seasonal fruit and veggies – I’ve never eaten pumpkin before and I feel like with them being such a quintessential part of Autumn and Halloween, I need to try and maybe bake some pumpkin bread, cook up some pumpkin soup or make some pumpkin cupcakes to celebrate! That also goes for apple crumbles, blackberry muffins, pear cake and all the other autumn goodies that are on offer.
- Bake a pie – especially in America, there’s nothing more autumnal than pies and I want in on the fun! Savoury or sweet, I want to make something to give me that warm happy feeling inside.
- Make Gingerbread – I adore gingerbread, the perfect biscuit for Autumn and Winter…and armed with some adorable cookie cutters, I’m going to bake up a storm.
- Eat my body weight in Halloween sweets – what is Halloween without sweets?!
- Drink some seasonal drinks – warmed cinnamon apple juice, hot chocolates, pumpkin spiced everything…the list goes on.
Activities
- Pumpkin Picking – a tradition my family have done for a few years now, this is one of my favourite things to do.
- Pumpkin Carving/Painting – I adore carving pumpkins, it is SO much fun though my skin actually reacts badly to getting pumpkin on me so carving can be difficult. I’ve seen some gorgeous painted pumpkins recently and thought it could be a cute alternative. I can’t wait to get creative either way.
- Watch scary films – Halloween is a time for spooks and so scary films are an absolute must. Whether that be fun scares like Beetlejuice or Hocus Pocus or more sinister frights like The Conjuring or Scream, there is always room for a horror film night bundled up on the sofa.
- Getting dressed up – so proper Halloween parties and trick or treating may not be the same this year with the current situation BUT that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun. Getting into costumes and taking some pictures, costume competitions over video call…there’s so much we can still do to celebrate!
- Scare Attractions – as with the last point, scare attractions and Halloween events are going to be different this year but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy them! Hopefully we’ll be heading to Alton Towers and Thorpe Park if possible this Halloween season to experience some thrills and scares.
- Go on an autumn walk or bike ride – as the weather gets cooler and the leaves change colour, it looks so beautiful outside…it would be such a shame to miss out on that! I definitely want to go on some nice walks, crunch some leaves under my feet and feel that autumn chill while the weather is still dry.
- Decorate – this year, I want to make an effort to dress up the house for the autumn season. I want pumpkins and flowers and candles to really make the house feel cosy.
- Build/visit a bonfire – Autumn doesn’t just mean Halloween, we’ve got Bonfire Night in there too! With caramel and candy apples, roasted marshmallows and warm drinks, a bonfire is such a perfect autumn experience.
- Tell stories – I don’t know why but Autumn feels like the perfect season for story telling…maybe for Halloween, we can tell some spooky ones too.
- Do some crafts – there are so many crafts we used to do as kids and I want to carry on that tradition now!
So that’s my Autumn/Halloween bucket list for this year. Hopefully, I’ll be able to cross some off before we hit that December mark…then I’ll have to think of a Winter/Christmas bucket list!
